A bit of volatile at first
Great intensity on the nose, but with layers of elegance. The fruit is red and tiny adorned by balsamic, forest floor, leather,truffle, white pepper, coriander and more, but all whispered in turns
The palate is even better: silky, vertical, filling though and absolutely never-ending.
It makes me think of what they say of Romanee-Conti that overpowers any other wine flavour without being powerful.
An experience!! At peak too i reckon.

Mid Crimson with a tawny rim of cold black tea. Initial aromas after decanting were subtle- old dusty roses to begin with but after 30 minutes its full majesty was revealed. A beautifully balanced palate where no one thing stood out except the trademark H of G silky supple tannins. Perhaps a hint of raspberry and coffee if you go searching. Jancis Robinson tasted the full array of 48 vintages at the winery on 21 March 2013 and gave this 19/20 with a drinking window of 2010 to 2040. Not sure I would be wanting to drink this after 2030. After 3 hours in the decanter it faded a little and became less complex but those supple dry tannins remained. The stellar 2012 was released in Australia last week with a price tag of $825. I won't be buying firstly because of the price and secondly because it will probably peak in 30 years time. This was my last bottle of 1991. Superlative!!

Apr 23rd, 2017Pulling out some Icon Aussie wines before our kids go back to chilly New York. This is the 91 Hill of Grace. The 91 Grange will follow. The H of G has a slightly vegetal nose with hint of ground coffee. Rich ( but fading) full mouthfeel. Medium + intensity with medium minus finish using the WSET method. A classy wine with supple silky tannins. Interesting diversity of opinion from the experts with Hooke and Halliday saying drink by 2013 and 2014 respectively whereas Jancis Robinson in London is saying to 2040. Loved the wine but prefer to drink now rather than 2040.

Wow. Incredible for a 1991 (actually, no age qualification necessary: just incredible). Amazing nose of crushed candied blackberries and eucalyptus, this is in incredible shape for a 28-year-old wine. If anyone out there thinks that great Australian wines can’t age...you are just wrong. A singular wine. Awesome.

This wine is usually quite amazing. Sadly, this bottle has a significant amount of brett.
