Freemark Abbey
Napa Valley Merlot
Napa Valley, California, USA

Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.
Fruity nose and full bodied with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate and complex.
Showing black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, toast, light vanilla, spices, dark chocolates, licorice, coffee, tobacco, light earth, herbs and peppercorn.
Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.
This is a delicious Merlot from Napa Valley. Rich and fruit forward. Nicely balanced with nice complexity. Tangy and interesting.
Good right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of airtime.
Still young, and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, but already drinking beautifully.
A great sipping wine that will also pair nicely with food.
A blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 19 months in (32% new) French Oak barrels.
14.5% alcohol by volume.
92 points.
$55.

If I were served this blind, I think I’d probably be more likely to peg this as a Saint-Emilion than a Napa Merlot. Not overly fruity, very nice savory notes.

Nose has dark cassis, iodine, clove, gravel. Dense but together on the palate. Tacky feel in a good way. Great now but will be better in 2-4.

This is a serious wine. On par with Pahlmeyer, but rising above in terms of focus, and letting the fruit shine more than the oak. Bravo. Pipe tobacco, damp earth and mulled blueberries

Delicious. A sentimental favorite winery for my wife and me, Freemark’s reds are, in my experience, consistently top notch. Nose has sweet Luxardo cherry, rich humus, just a tad of barrel spice, stony crushed gravel, and sniffably tangy acids. Round and full-flavored, it’s got smoky cassis fruit that is clingy and turns minerally/savory as the finish progresses. Soft textured and balanced. Just a joy to drink.

Palate of cherries, bitter chocolate and clove.
This is Napa Valley Merlot all right. And it is delicious with a NY Strip.
Happy Merlot month everyone!

Too young, not half as good as the Bosché Merlot. 🤨
