François Chidaine
Les Argiles Vouvray Chenin Blanc
It’s interesting to compare to Huet, though didn’t have them side by side. Chidaine kind of inhabits the mouth & palate, as if taking up residence: it’s so full & voluptuous.vibrating golden rod color, sunflowers. Waxy white & yellow stone fruits, with echoes of minerality. The fruit is dominant in its favor, I believe, but the half life could be so long can imagine a glorious tertiary & mineral future. I just can’t keep my paws off them long enough.

Oct 17th, 2023This one was much softer and less complex but very drinkable.

Feb 21st, 2022The 5 years of age have either barely made a dent, or this is drinking beautifully now ( or both): start with the thick yet smooth mouthfeel-if Chenin is sometimes described as cotton wool, this is more like cashmere-& also enough acidity to keep it refreshing. Layers of Chenin style fruit: Granny Smith apple, white flowers, Acadia honey. Just a rock star wine, plays brash compared to Huet’s stateliness. And for about 10$ less, a relative steal..

Dec 2nd, 2021Beautifully textured, almost oily like Viognier but not; Green apples & skins on the nose; deep, deep minerality & that Chenin Blanc cotton thing on the palate. Just a super bottle of wine. Plus the bottle is built like a tank.

Mar 29th, 2021What a beautiful wine.
It’s voluptuous, suave, rich. With notes of juicy fruits like a vine peach, could feel apricots not too far but also feel like biting in a very ripped pear, but then very quicly it gets precise, straight and almost crisp with very nice bitters and acidity. Although very different, that’s something I find also in good trocken rieslings.
Great wines are about balance and that is all this is about!

Ultra-classic Loire Chenin. Bruised Macintosh apples dipped in honey—perfect for Rosh Hashanah dinner. Waxy, chamomile, hay. Viscous but dry. Mouthwatering acidity and minerality.

Sep 30th, 2019Terrific value Chenin Blanc. Crisp pear, citrus, hay and honey. Dry with excellent acidity. So versatile- I had it with razor clams, branzino with anchovies and pasta with a light Ragu and it was a home run with each. Very versatile.
