Forlorn Hope
Mataro
A surprising oaky component, which blew off with some air. Translucent, but with a coarse tannic bite. Red fruited and herbal. Interesting stuff.

Jan 4th, 2017From the Rorick Vineyard in Cavaleros County (one of the counties in Sierra Foothills that has no AVA). Transparent ruby turning orange at the rim. Fresh Provence herbs in the nose. Medium-bodied, high acidity, more elegance than power, present but well-integrated tannin. Good length. Could do with a bit more concentration though to be truly great.

Nov 5th, 2016Hard to imagine a better wine with mesquite smoked ribs. Fruit and feral and meat and palate refreshing acidity. And a touch of that peach thing all these Cali Mourvedres get, which really seals the deal.

Jun 21st, 2016The oak is a little separate from the wine, with a noticeable caramel pop to it. Elegant and silky in texture, the fruit is plum and blueberry. I know this ages in used oak, but I was surprised how much oak. Some time should integrate this better, so wait another 6 months.

Apr 4th, 2016A gift from the producer and it’s a delicious bottle. The nose is quite fruity but the wine is more earthy, with acid and grip.

Sep 27th, 2018Somehow, someway Forlorn Hope keeps pumping out great stuff. This Mataro (Mourvèdre) is a little less off the wall than some of the other offerings but no less delicious. Ruby red with a light violet rim. Highly perfumed nose of exotic herbs, a ton of sweaty funk, and juicy red fruits. High acidity here with tannins that don’t overpower. Plums, funky, funky earth, blueberries, and caramel dominate on the palate. The spices and meaty flavors really take this to another level.
