Fattoria Poggio di Sotto
Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
It's such a pleasure to taste the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio di Sotto; this is easily one of the wines of the vintage. Its bouquet is pure class, balsamic, exotic and spicy. A blend of dried orange and cloves gives way to sweet lavender and black cherries. Elegant and silky, yet with cooling acidity and depths of tart red berry fruits, the 2016 impresses further with a salty savoriness and a sense of sheer energy. It leaves a coating of dusty tannins and dark florals to resonate, displaying a youthful concentration slowly easing as traces of licorice fade through the incredibly long finish. Another successful blind by all accounts! Only thing I didn’t nail was the producer - just thought it might have been one of the old school producers, which was still a good guess upon reveal. As for the wine itself - delicious! Red of the night for sure. Sexy bouquet with aromas of macerated cherries, strawberries, roses, orange peel and a touch of white pepper. On the palate, it was really mouth-filling, yet quite digestible due to the lively acidity. Having said that, it’s still quite packed and firm at this stage so best to keep these under locks. Overall, an elegant Brunello, though not at the level of Stella di Campalto’s ethereal examples.

Luminous red. Delicately smoky and ripe on the nose, with deep raspberry and red cherry aromas complicated by notes of sandalwood, licorice, graphite and sweet pipe tobacco. Full and rich but also very bright, with red and dark berry flavors given life by juicy, harmonious acidity and very nicely framed by supple tannins. Closes long, fresh, and expansive, deeper and less sweet than the estate’s 2018 Rosso di Montalcino also released this year. Utterly delicious and already accessible, this boasts noteworthy elegance and freshness for such a big ripe wine. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, April 2020)

Great nose. Cherries, cherry flower. Deep, ripe and complex. Sweet fruit and leaves. Elegant and long.

Aug 18th, 2019Lithe and ethereal. Unlike any Brunello I've had. Almost redolent of nebbiolo in a perfect spot.
