Tar, tar, tar, fruit? Flowers? Expected a bit more at this age.

Second red wine at Table #3 at Oakton Wine Shops Bucket List Tasting.

Medium ruby core with garnet edges. Dark and tight nose with berries, earthy notes and tobacco. Medium tannins (6/10) and medium plus body. Layers of black cherries, tobacco leaves, cigar box and cassis on the palate. Medium plus finish. Drink till 2025.

The 2003 Terra Di Lavoro is a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso, vines that have been coaxed into production along the steep, volcanic hillsides of northwestern Campania. Tasted blind, the aromatics are reminiscent of an aged Côte-Rôtie, with primal notes of moist earth, truffle, mushroom, game, smoke and bacon fat. The intensity on the nose suggests a fuller wine, but in reality Terra di Lavoro is medium bodied, with fine tannins and precise balance. It finishes with notes of leather, tobacco and char.

The ripeness and softness of this surprised me very much. Quite nice, though it should have been had with food, and/or open for much longer. This stuff can age a good long while.

One of my best food pairings of the year.
A friend gifted me several handfuls of pomodori di vesvuvio, tiny plum tomatoes grown on Mt. Vesuvius. They were so intense and unlike any tomato I've ever smelled or eaten before. I made a sauce of olive oil packed tuna with onion, pine nuts and capers saucing extra thick fettucione.
The synergy and harmony between food and wine made descriptions unnecessary.

Tight as hell on opening. 2 hours in the decanter really let this shine, esp with rich meats. Will go another 10 easy

Needs three hours in the decanter to open up. Ripe tannins, strong acid, beautiful spice component on the mid palate, long finish. Lots of power but with a certain elegance. Nice wine.
