Oct 14th, 2018Medium intensity garnet ruby core with wide quite garnet rim. Takes a bit of air to get going . Quite round and ripe on the nose spiced red cherry , orange rind , anis , black tea , hint of rose. On the palate more or the ripe red fruits , cherry and raspberry. Quite sweet fruit but with enough acidity to balance , gritty tannin, alcohol sticks out a bit . Good length with more mineral , saline and slightly herbal touches . This is in a good place with time in the glass, needs a bit of time to get going, in fact the following day shows better still . Will probably improve over the next few years and last a further 10 or so

Nose : cherry flower. Cherry. May be mildly corked. Fuck. God hates us all. No. Just sorta closed and a bit old library. Not sure it has the aromatic gorgeousness to get it to a 9.5. 3 hours in gorgeous. Cherry flower. Some dried rose. Lovely.
Palate: fresh cherries. Lovely juiciness. A hint of that Burgundian water on hot brick. As it opens starting to get that sweet cherry licorice thing. A mountain stream of cherry licorice on the finish. As it opens really lovely (I like that). 3 hours in hits a 9.5.

First Elio Sandri Barolo for me... uber traditional, possibly the most old school barolo I’ve tried. Very well made with excellent structure built around seating acidic backbone. I’d be intrigued to try some others with proper age.

Dec 22nd, 2020Takes a lot of air to unfurl but it’s worth the wait for classic tar, roses, and dark red fruit.
