Dominio del Aguila
Pícaro del Águila Clarete Tempranillo Blend
Not your grandmothers clarete- whatever that may be. Light hibiscus in color, with strong notes of red currant, blood orange, cassis, and black cherry. A bit chewy & substantial on palate. While it’s not Rose, I could see serving this to someone who finds Lopez de Heredia Rose too funky or… like me, cost prohibiting. For about 70$ less, it’s delicious & fascinating.

Aug 6th, 2024pairs magically with some Iberico Salchichón, Chorizo and Manchengo!
“Please don’t call it rosé. It’s pink, but it’s clarete.”

Lopez de Heredia rose lovers alert: a sumptuous, big complex nose of rose hips & sour melon, sherry like: mouth filling palate of dried white peach, white flowers, & cotton wool- but more like oxidized Chenin. Clarete the style, not the varietal here; lovely texture too & a vibrant life saver orange/red. Red & white blend. What a wine. Paired with gazpacho with my wine geek/ professional friends, who were so generous in bringing this to dinner.

Jun 24th, 2021Extremely pale red. Pungent red berry, blood orange and floral aromas are complicated by smoky minerals and white pepper. Sappy and sharply focused on the palate, offering red currant, raspberry and floral pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Delivers a suave blend of power and finesse and finishes long and minerally, with resonating floral and red fruit notes. All whole clusters and fermented in large, neutral French oak vats; aged for 16 months in neutral French and American oak barrels. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, February 2021)

I seem to prefer the 2015 Clarete at this moment than the 2014. It seems more poised and balanced with a internal elegance that makes this highly drinkable. Aromatically complex with notes of sweet cranberries, raspberries, orange peel, lavender, thyme, a slight old woody cabinet aroma followed by exotic spices. A nice mid bodied wine with crisp red fruit flavors on entry, refreshing balsamic midpalate with hints of citrus that lead to a chalky mineral finish that just permeates every inch of the mouth and keeps on going and going. This is incredibly delicious and mesmerizing.

Looks like #rose but is not. DO Ribera Del Duero. Is a clarete, a blend of red & white grapes. Much more red wine texture & mouthfeel than a rose. #sundaylunch
