Domaine Vacheron
Les Romains Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc
The 2021 Les Romains is a pure, clean and focused style. There's a delicate flint note on the nose and a precise line of acidity and push-pull texture on the palate. It's a firm style that speaks of its place - on the flinty side of Sancerre's fault line. There are no pretty florals here like you'd find on the chalk soils of Sancerre but a tension alongside greener-edged fruit. This is an assertive, vertical wine but not as nuanced. In time, it will improve, retaining brightness, unlike many wines found on the limestone, which are more immediately charming. (Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, July 2023)

Jul 27th, 2023Les Romains is a vineyard with its feet in flint to the east of the fault line in Sancerre. The 2020 Sancerre Les Romains begins with a fruity and open welcome, blossoming and silken in the mouth before tying the wine up; the flint influence acts like the belt on a pair of trousers tightening up the middle and leaving a sensation of sinew and length with a fine nettley fragrance. (Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, August 2022)

Beautiful wine - just couldn’t get to Sancerre with this. So ripe. Pear and melon and green mango. Most 2018 Sancerre’s lost their grassy edge.

Apr 26th, 2022The 2019 Sancerre Les Romains is made in a supple, full style with a sense of lightness. It has the balance of a gymnast and a fine texture. The satisfying, mouthwatering, refined finish features delicate fragrances of chamomile and lemon. (Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, August 2021)

The Vacheron family have been leaders in the appellation for practicing organics and biodynamics since the early 2000’s and generally follow non-interventionalist wine making techniques. Their dedication is evident in the beauty and expression of terroir in their wines. “Les Romains” is a single vineyard planted about 40 years ago on 100% Silex. Popped and poured; consumed over 2 days and it was delicious on both. In the glass, it appears a very pale straw color with medium viscosity. Medium+ intensity. Remarkably fresh with bright lemon-lime citrus with some melon and rocks. One the palate, silex, citrus and minerals with an uncanny steel-like texture. High acid. Long satisfying finish. An uncompromising blend of energy and elegance. It’s a wine you want to crush…but there’s a sophistication about it that makes you reflect on how damned good it is. Age-able? Undoubtedly! But it’s going to be hard to cellar something this good. Beautiful wine!

Aug 15th, 2021An ethereal wine that does not sacrifice depth or refreshment at the table. Just beautiful, especially day two. Knock out with steelhead trout and pistou.

Feb 22nd, 2021The 2016 'Les Romains' is simply gorgeous, as it begins with striking aromatics of wildflowers, honey, lychee and cantaloupe that immediately draw you in. The texture and minerality is simply stunning, as flavors of with tree fruit and citrus oil leave a mark. The oily, unctuous character this possesses is found in very few Sauvignon Blancs. An absolutely brilliant wine from one of the leading producers in the region. Drink 2019-2033- 95
