Domaine Roulot
Meursault - Charmes 1er Cru Chardonnay
Light canary gold color. Inspiring nose. Notes of citrus, white clay, cardamom, tan spice and some white flowers. Young and fat in the mouth at first, flabby. But with 7-8 hours of air, this explodes with acidity to match the voluptuous fruit. Long finish. Taken to the new Chez Noir in Carmel (really good food - they will eventually get a star!). Sadly my last bottle of this, which easily had 10+ more years to go. Outstanding juice.

Feb 1st, 2023Light gold in the glass, not showing much age yet. Fun nose. Notes of citrus, some tropical fruit, gravel stone, some lime blossoms, some chopped pistachios, and a little spice. Rich and round in the mouth. Doesn’t show the sharp acidity of other vintages, expresses the vintage well. Drinking well now but can sit and gain complexity with more age.

Feb 15th, 2021Light gold. Awesome nose. Notes of lemon and tan spice, white stones, some mint and fennel, and a hint of tangerine. Lean and razor sharp in the mouth. In perfect shape, and bottles like this easily have 10 more years of life during which it can certainly improve. Gave it 3 hours in a decanter and it was still pretty tight in its showing.

Oct 19th, 2020Straw to medium gold color. Nice weight. Notes of apricot, tan spice, kiwi, dusty clay and some wax. At first it’s watery and sweet in the mouth. After 2+ hours of air it firms up to give nice structure and acidity. Slightly missing in the mid palate. Good not great. Continue to be unsure about this wine which I’ve had many times. It’s better today than samples from the past few years. Maybe just more time is needed.

Oct 18th, 2019Sadly this is showing signs of pox. Not gone yet, but none of the freshness and dynamism you’d expect if Roulot. Past the apple juice there’s clean fruit with good salinity. Unfortunate, and kinda annoying having saved this until it should be singing.
