Red Leflaive: the white whale of Burgundy. These vines were ripped out in 2002 and were replanted with chardonnay -- the wine from this plot now being labelled Meursault. This wine is developed, borderline tiring with plenty of savory forest floor/tobacco/sour red plum notes. This bears no comparison to their whites, but is interesting nonetheless.

1985 vintage. Kindly provided by Brice - one of the last remaining bottles at the Domaine. Pale garnet hue. Initial whiff of horse manure and earthy bracken faded to a very interesting expression of Pinot Noir - animalistic, redcurrants and a slight iron rusty metallic note that I sometimes pick up on old bottles of Burgundy. On the palate, slightly less interesting - a bit dull, lacking lift and energy - very much past it's prime if still some enjoyment. The finish is drying out. Very interesting and a rare bottle indeed. Not for further ageing.
