This is actually a Côtes Catalanes Rouge, not”Roussillon”. 40% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan, 30% Syrah. A bit too “dirty” for me - was hoping for cleaner expressions of these grapes. Just very muddled. A bit of reduction, decanted to blow it off. Still, not what I wanted.

Apr 4th, 2022Lots of aromatic complexity and finesse, the heat is deftly managed here and the alcohol kept in check. Freshness abounds, as do violets, lavender, sweet black berries, plums and garrigue. Mostly Grenache but the carignane and particularly the Syrah make themselves known. Velvety smooth texture

Jan 19th, 20202017 vintage. Purple core, fading into slightly violet rim. Staining in the tears. Dark and brambly red and black fruit - cherries, blackberries, plums, slightly confectioners. Much riper than I remembered. Nutmeg and clove. Cocoa, chocolate, integrated tannin. Med plus acid, med plus tannin, med plus finish. Can definitely use some time. 13.5% alcohol.

Tastes great; less filling. Once again, it’s the confident, relaxed and precise benchmark for what all Catalan reds should be, combining an almost ferrous minerality with a pure expression of Grenache and Carignan that walks the line between reductive and oxidative. And once again, far too many of us will fall for the high-octane, vaguely-Rhônish, Prisonerized, nondescript slop that seems to be all the rage.

The confit red fruits, pie spice, bramble and wood smoke on the nose make you think it’s going to be a sledgehammer...and then it’s all elegance, filigree and lift on the palate, as it’s only 12.5% alcohol. Simple, non-interventionist vinification, but none of that natural bullshit. Everything in perfect order. #rocdesanges #roussillon #grenache #syrah #carignane

But old vines, careful bio viticulture and the daring to harvest at the precise arrival of ripeness (13%) make for a modern-day version of iron fist in velvet glove. And on top of all that, the Catalan qualities shine through more and more with each successive vintage. Fraises, bramble, confits of tiny red fruits and the persistent haunt of black, low pH schist.
