Volnay Pinot Noir

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2023 Volnay pours a deep ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is youthful with notes of forest strawberry, raspberry, Bing cherry, red flowers, sous bois and mixed spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and the texture is almost chewy. This is a very pretty, but also quite powerful and certainly fleshy Volnay that I expect this will show a lot more with some time in the cellar. Drink now to enjoy its youth and through 2038. Such an amazing village wine. Stunning wet earth and sappy mid-season cherries. Just so much aromatic lift and intensity. Unreal on the pop and pour. Gorgeous, tiny berried and very intense sweet fruit. Pure and balanced. Fresh and energetic. Velvety tannins and just terrific balance. So balanced I said it twice. Unbelievably delicious.

Showing so well. Unreal nose of black cherry and black raspberry. Plus a lipstick like intensity. Palate has tons of sweet cherry fruit and an earthy baseline. Terrific inner mouth aromas and velvety, sweet but substantial tannins. Now some lovely Volnay finesse coming through. Score may go higher.

2023 let’s fucking go! Deeply fruited nose with red and black cherries and such clarity. The fruit smells ripe and fleshy but never overdone. It’s just gorgeous. Wild mint, desiccated tree bark, cherry skins and more. Palate is the real deal. Unreal fruit density and purity Superb concentration and the cherry fruit is just perfect. Sappy, silky and fleshy. Lingering. Perfect acidity and balance. With air some lipstick like intensity shows up on the nose. Wonderful, sweet velvety tannins. Explosive with the most unreal tiny berry fruit intensity. Gorgeous. Let’s see what air brings. Super floral aromatically now with air and the minerals and sous bois are shining! The nose has such lift with air and the palate is so juicy with such fleshy fruit that is sweet but also energetic and lean at the same time.

Needs to open. Wow. What a nose. Unreal, ethereal cherries, spice and flowers. So nimble and evocative. Tree bark, citrus rind, earthiness and a lipstick like intensity. So stunning. Aromatic elegance defined. Palate is elegant and nimble but also has killer acidity and energetic but is also backwards. I will be back. Now after some time one this is so pretty. Gorgeous texture and sweetness with terrific grip and structure. Lovely spice and depth. So hauntingly elegant.

Gorgeous nose. Luscious dark black cherries and darker red cherries. Ethereal and heavenly. So deep and so enveloping. Gorgeous dusty tree bark, some soy as well. Stunning. Best village nose of any Buffet Volnay I’ve had. The fruit clarity is off the charts. Superb complexity and freshness and the fruit is way redder on the palate. Amazing compact quality and so pure and balanced. Complex and so mineral. This is profoundly delicious. A lithe but substantial structure. Gorgeous saline aspect on the nose. Wow the mineral/fruit combo is only something Burgundy can do at this level. Now the florals are kicking in. What sweet, velvety tannins. A beautiful bottle of Volnay. This improved vastly with air, getting darker, more dark fruit driven and so sapid. brilliant!

Ahhhhh what a wine. Wonderful haunting nose of mid to late season cherries, spice, earth, tree bark, hint of sweet cherry. Some complex herbs and a wonderful hint of iodine. Love salt aromas in red wines. Classic haunting Volnay.

What an elegant, masterful palate. Lithe and fresh. So complex and wonderful spice. Terrific velvety tannins and tremendous spice and so so fresh. Such terrific energy and linearity. Elegant and wonderful. This as classic as village Volnay gets and gets a turbo boost in the finish as that’s what 19 is about. Right on the edge of 9.4. We will see what air brings.

Nose is really soaring after an hour open. Candied and complex. Haunting and ethereal. Elegant and sweet. So fine and refined. Lovely finish and great building persistence.

Beautiful mashed mid season cherries, cooling spices, some tangy strawberry and cranberry as well. Superb earth and a hint of lipstick like intensity. Very deep. Very layered, very old school and so classic. Volnay 101. Palate is elegant, clean as a whistle and has lovely sour cherry, mid season and early season cherry fruit and also ripe strawberries but it’s not about fruit. Huge stoney minerals and great energy are the core of this wine. Gorgeous texture. Lovely succulence and sap. Long finish. Long and serious wine. Only gets better with air.

Stunning nose. Buffet is so great. Deep cherry, deep black cherry, deep berries, plum, spice, lavish minerals, layered and deep. Wow, palate is stacked. Pure fruit, tons of cherries, impressive concentration. Energetic edges but creamy in the middle. Dense, structured and energetic with big, imposing but ripe tannins. The lower wines are terrific for now in 18, but the higher ones once they age will be legend. But they will need age. Wonderful finesse and elegance but big late breaking ripe and juicy tannins.
