Carelles sous la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir

This is a superstar wine in 22 and now 23. They also could not be more different. Stunning nose of ripe mid to late season cherry and a hit of kirsch. Stunning fruit clarity. Gorgeous stoniness and elegant herbs. Terrific tiny berry fruit intensity. Elite finesse and shows the silkiness of this brilliant site. The tannins are stoney and big but ripe and sweet. This doesn’t have the decadence of the 2022. Great freshness and has that chord progression fruit that is a signature of 2023. Unreal silkiness. Gorgeous wine but will be better with a few more hours of air. Oh it’s getting opulent like this site does and wow the energy is off the charts. Tannins melting into fruit. After 5-6 hours this is just insane. The energy of 23 and the opulence of 22. Genius!

So good. 22’s rounding into the form I had from barrel in June 23. Unreal cherry clarity on the nose and super floral. Pungent. Palate is so good. Opulent sweet fruit but all so chiseled. Juicy and just gorgeous clarity of fruit here. Sick inner mouth aromas. Such finesse and softness but structured softness. Unreal velvet texture. Let’s see what air does. Supple and sweeter with air.

I adore the classic style of 2021 and they are so approachable. What a gorgeous wine. Look at that color. The nose is ethereal cherries and spice. So perfectly ripe but mid season, cool climate cherries. Sea air and forest floor but all so delicate and elegant. Unreal. 9.7 nose. Palate is so forward, round and juicy. Has that middleweight perfection of 21 and that clear, luscious red fruits. Like a sphere on the palate. Awesome. Lovely sour and mid season cherry. So wispy and nimble. Almost like a German Swiss Pinot but very Burgundy.

I love 17 at Buffet and also in general. What a terrific vintage. Stunningly fragrant and juicy cherries. Unreal mineral/limestone focus and insane spices. So so fragrant after around 45 minutes. What one wants. Palate is ripe and juicy and so silky with nice delicacy and wonderful spices. Long finish and so elegant as this site tends to be. This is a 9.4 easy as it lacks the density to be elite.

Always one of the most elegant 1er Crus in Volnay. Nose is a bit reticent as we start off with light cherry and some herbals plus some sweet black cherry fruit. Also some reduction which will blow off. Lovely bramble desiccated leaves and super wet earth and soil tones. What a palate. Teeming with energy and freshness. Wow great acidity here and tremendous fruit. Terrific inner mouth aromas and stunning sapidity. So elegant and structured with incredibly deep fruit. What length and seriousness! This is the first 2020 i’ve tasted that needs 3-5 years in the cellar. Amazing sweet tannins and they are so finely knit like a cashmere sweater. This is brilliant! I’ll be back as it opens. This got so complex and expansive with air. Stunning depth and purity. Really incredible complexity and a vast array of flavors.

Have not had in a while any serious 2018. Time to check in. Nose is gorgeous mid season cherries, elegant florals, subtle minerality. It’s holding back as 2018 just has so much material. But what is there is terrific. Palate is fantastic. Gorgeous, elegant and sappy fruit. Excellent sweetness and purity. Dark red cherry and mid season cherries and brilliant elegant tannins. Fantastic. Still delicate as this site tends to be but has the power of 18 as well. Huge concentration and sap. Dense yet delicate. So young but so fantastic. Awesome fruit soak and inner mouth aromas. Love the character of 18 and once it matures I think it’s going to be epic.

Wow. This nose slays. Gorgeous mid to late season cherries. Unreal minerals. Sappy, so clean and so pure. 19 has such dazzling purity. Wow what a palate. So precise and focused. Acid etched with a laser. Sumptuous yet so refined with just awesome cherry concentrated fruit and such fine tannins. Sweet but also excessively mineral and that finish. Wow, what a finish. Unreal purity and length. Blown away. Sadly all sold out at the estate.

Delectable ate my note but in a new weird way. Anyway, this is gorgeous. Cherry flower, sour cherries, so floral, so pretty. Such a Volnay nose. Classic nose. Palate is just stunning. Wow. Incredibly concentrated and so pure with a black cherry, late season red cherry fruit soak that is unreal. Clean, mineral and so so juicy. Balanced and so elegant with ripe and elegant tannins. Super high quality tannins and great freshness. Long, lingering black cherry on the finish. Hit of opulence just stays in your mouth. Just terrific fruit. It’s dense and elegant with just crazy energy and delineation. This is wow wine.

Wow. What a sexy beast.

Nose is intoxicating. Deep. Sexy. Draws you in. Warm but not in a hot way but am inviting one. As it opens brighter and more sensual and less overtly sexy.

Palate is utterly delicious. Perfect fruit. Medium cherry. Some perfect strawberry. Amazing.

Long, luscious finish. Somewhat psychotic.
