Five single-vineyard CA Pinots vs 5 Burgs: Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanee + three 1er Crus Beaunes. All 2005s. Rob Jensen, owner, and Sue Ryan, lead wine educator at Testarossa joined our group for the tasting. This was not one of my favorites of the evening.

Dark cherry juice, Vosne spices, and game. Dead on the second day. Forey’s village level Vosne rouge are sourced from 1 ha of vines divided from 14 parcels scattered throughout northern Vosne-Romanée where the average vine age is around 40 years with the oldest planted in early 1940s, Guyot-trained at high vine density ~10k vines/ha. Partial (~50-60%) destemming after 3-4 days cold soak. Stainless steel fermented. Spontaneous malo and aged 18 months in foudre. No fining or filtering, sulfur’d only at bottling.

Fairly dark fruited burgundy. Some spice. Pretty mute nose. A bit rough around the edges.

Paired with the third course of Caillettes of Rabbit, an exceptionally executed course and pairing. This Vosne-Romanee had some “omff” to it; a slightly darker version of Pinot Noir but still on the elegant end of the spectrum.

A lovely smooth and elegant fruit forward village VR with just enough punch. Drinking well right away out of the bottle. Med weight with plummy fruit. At around $60 retail great price/performance for Burgundy. .

I know I accused @Izek of baby killing but needed to know if I should purchase more of this. Leaning heavily towards yes!

Sexy aromas of black raspberry, coffee and flowers. Suave and rather refined in the middle palate, showing more soil-driven saline minerality than fruit sweetness today but in an elegant style. The persistent, firm finish features smooth tannins and a spicy element. (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017)
