There are two kinds of st Joseph. This is one of the good ones. Long finish. Complex. Quite serious.

Deep, lurid ruby. Displays highly expressive aromas of blackberry, cherry compote, pungent flowers, olive and black pepper, plus a hint of smoky bacon. Chewy and expansive in the mouth, offering intense, spice- and mineral-accented black and blue fruit, bitter chocolate and violet pastille flavors, with a sweetening touch of cola. Finishes impressively long, energetic and focused, with resonating floral and spice notes and youthfully firming tannins. 100% whole clusters and all neutral oak. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, December 2022)

2014 drunk in 2022. Deep fruit and leathery tannins, just as you’d expect. Wonderful.

Big blackberry and plum juice nose, beautiful pastry notes of berry tart, smoke, sweetness and funk. Grape juice and granite. A touch of black pepper spice and amazing mineral density. Burly but clean and satisfying. Some bitterness on the finish that should resolve with time, otherwise drinking really nicely.

Punches above its already massive weight. Meaty. Purple-y, plummy stone fruit overtones. Wonderful.

Really smoky and meaty at first, but that integrates a bit with time in the glass. A textbook Northern Rhône Syrah - rich yet balanced, with all the savory and earthy components in nice proportion, and just enough dark stone fruit and berry pie to keep you thinking.

Dark, brooding, mysterious, loads of herbs and liquid rocks. Obviously infanticide so this will clearly get higher marks over time
