Domaine de Pignan
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend
Monthly WTF wine group meet up. This month is new world vs old world Rhône’s. All wines tasted blind. 3 flights.
This was tasting really smooth. I guessed mid ‘00s new world Grenache. Stewed raspberries and blackberries, cardamom, old plum, and even some old graham cracker sweetness upfront. Retained some solid spiced red fruit notes on the palate and some savory herbal notes. I didn’t get any black pepper on this. Nice.

Then it gets interesting: espresso and tobacco leaf, cocoa nib, cola and cool. Or is that sassafras?? Pink peppercorn, portobello and candied pomegranate. Handstands. Hell yes. Thank you. 🙏

When put in between 2 California chardonnays, I was thrown for a loop. Thought initially it could be an Australian Riesling, but as you can see, I was way off. The hidden sweetness to it was unique, and it had great acidity.

Jun 22nd, 2020Lighter style c9p on its way out after 10 years. Balanced acidity. Some red fruits, herbs and a Smokey note. Tannines complete resolved but there is some grip left. Not bad with some marinated lamb from the q.
