Domaine de la Grande Colline
Syrah
Atypical St. Joseph from Hirotake Ooka. Savage, high toned florals with fruits more in the red and blue spectrum, higher acid and less extraction than typical. Threw off sediment; needs decanting. Quite a bit of va but it works with the strong rose petal and sappy, brambly qualities apparent on the nose and palate. Some clove and a subtle hint of meat char. Similar to Souhaut, more floral than savory, though missing that classical balance. Far out on the natural side of the spectrum; but pretty.

Apr 12th, 2021Needed a bit of time to shed the carbonation, but good blue fruits, white pepper and cured meats. Good stuff, last of 14s.

Feb 22nd, 2021These Ooka wines are cool. Similar to Souhaut, full of pretty black and blue fruit, olive, meat and pepper while still being light and open and generous. Sometimes you might want a little more muscle from the Northern Rhône, but mostly I just love the juicy and accessible cool climate Syrah. Yum.

Sep 30th, 2017A stellar natural wine. At just 12% abv, it’s light on its feet with prosciutto, white pepper, blue and blackberries.
