Domaine Courbis
St. Joseph Syrah
This bottle of 2020 Courbis Saint-Joseph was opened in advance but unsure of how long prior; likely before service or even the day before. The wine pours a violet color with a translucent core. Medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, deep, dark candied black fruits with purple flowers, coffee, milk chocolate and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose with a bit of black pepper on the finish…which is long. While this isn’t a showstopper, it is good and serves as a reminder that these wines from Domaine Courbis shouldn’t be slept on. Great value. Drink now with some patience and should drink well through 2030.

I know the wines of northern rhone can be too meaty and wild for some people, but that's the very reason I gravitate toward them. 2015 is not a vintage I'm liking because everything is radically fruit forward.

Jun 27th, 2018Solid. Great value N. Rhône wine, captures the Domaine’s style very well. Nicely fruited, all black with riper tones of plum and crushed ripe blackberry, a denser and more concentrated offering, juicy. A kiss of blue fruit pokes out on the palate. Licorice, sweet meat/jerky, mocha, smoke, menthol. Drinking very well in its youth, still has some grip and substance to lay down for a few years.

Feb 28th, 2018Replacement btl! Much better this time. Easy-drinking and not super-complex at the outset.

Jun 13th, 2021Ruby-red in color with high saturation. Aromas of blackberry, leather, vanilla, and pepper. Well-balanced on palate (sweet and savory). Full-bodied and high tannins. Medium, earthy finish.
