The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba is a very serious wine. Deeply pitched notes of balsamic, menthol, licorice, spice, chocolate and blackberry soar out of the glass. A wine of depth and textural drive, the 2020 captures tons of Monforte character. Soft tannins (for a young Barolo) make the 2020 surprisingly—I should say shockingly—accessible. What a wine! Full of leather, mint, herbs with a core of dried fruit. Refined but plentiful tannin. Diego Conterno is a new one for me, but I can see the hype is real.

2019 vintage. Last tasted two years ago 4.3.24 (9.4). Dusty, decaying rose petals in the nose with a hint of quality dark chocolate. Medium body. Pink peppercorns aplenty, some tar, some grilled green onion, orange citrus influence (tangerine?) and Luxardo cherry reduction in the flavors. Only 4 bottles left on the list at $125 a bottle. May hafta take it off the list and buy it all. Currently occupying that weird Barolo space between drinkability and don't you dare. Flashing those tannic, Wolverine adamantium claws now. Leaning more towards the don't even think about it, Bub. This was delicious tho. 4.6.26.

2019 vintage. Big body, fruit and spice. Movin and grooving. Fairly accessible now despite the massive qualities of the vintage but try to hide it if you can. 4.3.24.

Nice barolo. Seemingly quite classic in style - restrained, minerally, earth, some nice fruit. Didn’t quite have the extra almost refreshing quality I get in 2016s sometimes but still a nice wine.

Great bottle with alot going on. Complex nose, with notes of earth and spice under brighter fruit flavors. Not heavy, nice balance between traditional and modern barolo styles.
