Sainte-Épine Saint-Joseph Syrah

Savory, smoky, and meaty with 30 minutes of air. Lots of baking spice and a hint of licorice. Nice tannin and some spiced red fruit. Would’ve called Rioja in a blind.

Deep ruby with garnet tinges. Neutral oak. Black and green pepper, dark fruits. Faint smoke and toast. Woodsy. Medium plus acidity, elevated tannin, medium plus and elevated body. Medium plus concentration.

Ripe and young but a total people pleaser....and I'm people.

True to site, missing some snap and punch, could be 2009's tendency for ripeness or the producers more modern hand in making it...either way pretty good.

Coffee, chocolate, overly ripe blueberry. Masterful blend of acid/tannin/alcohol. This is Rhone! 2011 Vintage

7/23 Concentrated and beautiful 90

Really lovely Syrah, we had it on a horrible July evening with a rib of beef.

Dense dark fruit with smoke, blackberry, black current. Tannins are still quite grippy, but work great in the whole balance.

Just starting to drink well and should improve and hold steady for the next decade. Is St. Joseph the Gigondas the Northern Rhone? A little under the radar, can deliver tremendous pleasure and value and at the same time, can be frustratingly inconsistent.
