Given the small production of most high-end northern Rhône wines, it isn’t that often that one gets the chance to drink one at full maturity, and this Hermitage was a remarkable example of just how complex and captivating this appellation’s wines, from a great year like 1990, can be at their peak, showing intense, pure dark fruit and floral character, mineral and spice nuances and Syrah’s typical smokiness. Delas owns a relatively massive seven hectares of this, one of the Hermitage hill’s prime vineyards, so finding younger versions of this wine (current examples are consistently superb) should be relatively easy. To be honest I would not have opened this but my friend wanted to share. Who am I to argue. Every preconceived notion I had was wrong. Too young and not approachable , wrong! Alcohol is going to be intrusive because of the vintage, wrong . Wood is going to dominate, wrong. A beautiful open nose flows into a well rounded and smooth ball of fruit nirvana. Goes without saying five years into the future this will be even better.

This was mine but blind, thought it was a Cote-Rotie, as the nose seemed to have that tropical Viognier tinge. Orange peel, leather. Light and dense at the same time, faded strawberry, black cherry. Touch of brett kept this from a higher score, but agree with Joe that this is peaking (though I think it could stay there a while...). Outstanding. Pretty clear where my Syrah/Shiraz biases are head-to-head.

Drinking near perfect, but would wonder if a few more years could be beneficial? 6+ hours in the decanter before it started to open tonight. Leather, earthy, red berries, a wonderful Syrah, with a flavor profile leaning towards Burgundy.

Ripe, spicy tannin, full body (borderline RS), great funk, evident VA.

A bon Tain bon vin - even in a rainy year. Finally shedding its acidulated side. Smoke, black olive, white flowers, peach even - classic 90s unripe Hermitage.

A stunning bottle and a reminder that Hermitage is as delicious as it is legendary.

Reddish brown in the glass. Not quite opaque. Really good nose that exhibits graphite and briary red fruits. Good finish. Still has some tannin to shed tho.
