Tasting the 2020 Soul of a Lion at Daou in Paso. And coincidentally, we were there on their last weekend as an independent winemaker. A nice goodbye before the corporates take over. Dark and concentrated. Beautiful cab.

This is a very dark wine, in appearance and aroma. The nose explodes with blackberry, blueberry, cassis, clove, tobacco and earth. The palate is mind-blowingly smooth. Blueberry leaps out first, followed by that wonderful chalky note found in Paso Cabs, then anise and other spices. The wine stops short of rustic and stays fully in the elegant region. Tannins are firm yet supple and the acidity is fresh. This is the 10th anniversary of Soul of a Lion, and some years will no doubt work their magic on it. I would love to taste this when the 20th anniversary rolls around.

My third vintage of Soul of a Lion, and the best one by far. Beautiful nose, long and expressive. The wine jumps right out of the bottle, not sure decanting makes much of a difference. Grippy tannins early on. Layers of fruit with cassis in the foreground. Elegant and balanced. Smooth and complex. Fantastic flagship for Daou. I am impressed. Also, this is my wine #1,500 on Delectable. Never thought I would taste this many wines, lol. Wine is good for the soul.

Excellent wine, the first of a Paso tasting recently done. Needs more time but still excellent.

This wine is inky in the glass, with no light getting through its rich, purple shade. The nose is a showcase for black and blue fruit, with a good deal of minerality and some nice floral notes. A little sweet oak spice comes through as well. On the palate, the fruit is dominant, but there is an ample sense of spice. The tannins are quite firm upon the first pour, but they settle down after the bottle has been open for a while. The finish is long and satisfying. In a region which produces outstanding Cabernet blends, this is one of the better ones.

Great birthday gift from a dear friend. Soul of a Lion is the best I’ve had in a long time!

Enjoyed the 2013, 2017 and 2018 Soul of a Lion today. The 2013 was drinking beautifully- hard to believe that this was only the third vintage of this wine.
