Concha y Toro
Reserva Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon
A spare from a shoot, I wasn’t expecting to actually enjoy a glass of this with the casserole made using the rest of the bottle - but enjoy it I certainly did.
This £5 Cab Sauv from Chilean behemoth Casillero del Diablo, of which some 20 million or so bottles are produced annually, is a bright, vibrant and well made red that provides intrigue and varietal typicity. Aromas of cranberry, macerated cherry, vine tomato and pinewood are followed by a saturated palate with slightly unripe tannins but good acidity. The finish of course fades promptly, but I have to take my hat off to this achievement.

Jun 15th, 2019Another aged gem found in the Ozarks. This one was at 7 years old. In excellent shape showing varietal character and refined tannins.

May 27th, 2018Dark
ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.
Pretty nose of blueberries, black currants, light cherries, oak, vanilla,
vegetables, bell pepper, cloves, pencil lead, wet leaves, earth and peppercorn.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and long legs.
Dry on the palate with plums, cherries, strawberries, currants, barnyard, green
vegetables, herbs, chocolates, wood, earth, bell pepper and peppercorn.
Medium finish with soft tannins and black pepper
This Chilean Cabernet is drinkable now, but needs a year in the bottle to
mature. Not fully balanced with mild complexity. Spicy with a nice mouthfeel. A
good everyday red wine from Chile.
Needs an hour to open up properly and show some tannins. Good by itself and better
with food. I paired it with soft and hard cheeses and light appetizers.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
$9.

Casillero del Diablo insists on having a great marketing around its product, especially in Latin America, but the quality of this Cabernet Gran Reserva (FYI, a wine a few months old is *not* a gran reserva) is very low. Acidic, strange long aftertaste, eventually numbs you out and it becomes watery. Never again.
