Vintage 2017 | too young but already beautiful balance

Aug 27th, 2021This is quite the sultry, voluptuous red. I was a little dismayed to see 16% on the label, but it was actually pretty balanced. Nose has warm sandstone, baking spice, and sweet oozing dark red berries. Full (obviously) in the mouth, with peppery berry fruit and stony minerality in the finish. Went really well with mesquite-grilled porterhouses.

Dec 7th, 2018Another visit to the weekly Wednesday Wine Committee, and a wonderful hosting by Glenn. As always, all wines are tasted blind. 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert.
Young and powerful! To me, this balanced the rich and ripe fruit with the herbal and savory notes of black pepper/spice. Fruit was very fresh and flavor packed up front, but the mid palate and finish showed great peppercorn notes.

We brought this bottle up from the cellar and pulled the cork about two hours before dinner simply to let it catch its breath and come up to temperature. In the glass, a very deep crimson robe. Notes of cherry pie, burned toast, a touch of wild game...a bit hot though too and I found that to be a bit distracting. On the palate, dark cherries and plums...just a hint of spice but pretty simple really. Very soft mouthfeel. Tannins have integrated and acid is low-ish so I can't imagine any reason to hold out in hopes of more. Set your expectations, if you have any, to "moderate" and drink now.
