Finally the 82 Mouton is showing. Last time a decade go it was like drinking glass so tight and hard we decanted for over a day. Powerful wine with grip and still evolving.

Last night I was fortunate enough to enjoy a bottle of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothchild that was stored with perfect provenance. Right out of the gate the core of dark fruits and exotic spices really impressed, as leather, pipe tobacco, red rose petal and forest floor tones also rounded out this evocative bouquet. The palate was utterly seamless, effortlessly gliding throughout. Silky, with a soft, pillowy texture, the wine unveiled blackberry compote, damp soil, Earl Grey tea and tobacco leaf flavors alongside a great level of tension. The length and viscosity of the wine was truly amazing. Gorgeous to enjoy at this stage, nearly in its 40th year, the 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothchild still has decades of life ahead of it. Drink 2020-2038- 100

Cork was soft, but after decanting it was amazing. Cherry at first. Will update after opening up.

Simply one of those moments in time that captures everything good about wine and life. Truly superb and drinking beautifully at 38

Smells like aged Bordeaux. Tar, cedar, tobacco, wet mulch. Starting it’s downward slope. This bottle not showing a lot. Tanins still grip but weak on fruit. Length is good but no real power or finesse here. She’s a bit over the hill. But she’s still got class.

It’s been open 4 hours and twice decanted. On the nose I get black pepper, white pepper, roasted red pepper. My sister smells intense vanilla bean. It’s lighter than I expected. Soft tannins, taste of pencil lead, roasted red pepper, charcoal, smoke, and meat. Served with filet mignon and after a bite of that it comes to life a little bit more. Maybe I’m a phillistine, but I’m kind of plus minus about this. 😕
