By no means one of La Mission Haut-Brions most praised vintages but this one holds together very nicely just over 20 years of age. Pleasant aromas and medium bodied. Plums, black currant, coffee, pencil shavings, leather, earth, orange zest, cacao. Only 13% abv but still quite ripe. It’s lacks some length to be a really great wine. It’s a classically styled Bordeaux with many years left.

Hard to imagine a more classic / perfect Bordeaux nose. Just screams those dark red fruit with leather and earth on the nose. Would not have guessed it was this old. Hard to say, though, if it will come together more with time versus staying slightly disjointed - the tannins and acid sort of follow after each other without a seamlessness that I’d expect. But still delicious.

Masculine and powerful. Earth, forest floor, mushrooms, umami, prominent oak (American oak?), celery. Fruit is stronger on the palate than on the nose: plum and cherry with licorice after an hour. Long mocha finish. Perfect balance of tannins and acidity. It just magically disappears, whether you intend to bring the glass to your lips or not. Pair with a lightly seasoned tenderloin or lamb. This could age 10+ more years but it's basically perfect now. Memorably enjoyable.
