Jan 21st, 2024Popped and poured, consumed over two days and was consistent throughout though it did seem to gain power on Day 2. I believe that Cesare sources his fruit from Roberto Voerzio’s holdings in Fossati but I don’t know that for certain; perhaps @Lyle Fass can confirm that for me. The 2018 “Fossati” from Cesare Bussolo, pours a bright, luminous garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is incredibly expressive and immediately noticeable on the pour. Notes of red and black fruits: Luxardo cherry, blackberries with fresh Colorado peaches, roses (loads of roses), dried green herbs, orange zest, dusty earth, and faint baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry and with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. There’s a lovely, firm texture to this wine and it comes across juicy which is really quite compelling. Alcohol is medium+ and comes across a little hot for my liking but I don’t find it distracting. All of the notes from the nose are confirmed with a long, dry and slightly bitter tannic finish. This is my first experience with Cesare Bussolo’s eponymous Barolo and I’m intrigued, particularly considering my impression is based off a 2018. I wouldn’t hesitate to drink now if you’re going to allows some significant air otherwise this will show better after 2025 and likely drink well through 2038 and likely well beyond that.

Sick. Super sick. Magic. The creme de la creme. This is a superstar wine. It’s so nice when elite expensive wine delivers. Nose has the most precise mid season cherries ever. So wow. Tar. Spice. Smoke. Layered like nothing else. Elite. A nose that captures you like nothing else. Licorice. So clean. Every aroma is so defined. So precise. But it also is ephemeral and flirty like great Nebbiolo should be. Seductive. Every sniff a new nuance. It smells crunchy. Ocean air leads to superb minerality. So so good. The clarity here is ridiculous. Just so insane. 9.8 nose. It might go higher. So elegant and concentrated with just the most precise fruit. Salty sweet almost. God damn this is so good. How to you get salty sweet cherries in a wine? And to have it taste this good. They are crunchy cherries as well. And like salt that you blend with caramel. That glistening salt. The clear stuff. Balanced. So so balanced and filled with energy and the most clear and precise fruit. Amazing tannins. Powerful but so deep and cuts a swath. Long like a July day. It never ends. And it coats your palate with minerals but the fruit keeps pushing for minutes. My score will be higher in 5-8 years.
Got insane overnight. Amazingly precise and smells elegant. Unreal sweet fruit. So pure. So complex. So powdery. Balance is superb. This is as good as Barolo gets. 9.7 to 9.8.

Been saving this as Cesare’s Barbera was transcendental and I knew the Barolo had to be at a minimum profound. My instincts were correct. The style here is classically styled but a hint of polish with such subtleties. More Robert Bressan than Jacques Tati. Just a stunning nose. Gorgeously refined, defined and perfumed cherry. Incredible mineral spine. Woodsy, salty. Just so complex. So perfumed. Flowers galore. Elite aromatics. Level of precision, refinement and vividness that is remarkable. Top top class. What a palate. Incredible fruit and so refined. My goodness this is one sexy, elegant wine. Wow. Chambolle 1er Cru like. So so pretty. Beautiful salty, cherry fruit, velvety and sweet tannins and just remarkable freshness and a 1/10th of a percent of opulence. The tannins are so sweet and refined but this does not come across as sweet due to the pointed minerality. So long. This will age decades but it is ridiculously great today. But ideally better and more integrated in 5 years. What a distinctive style here.

Jun 6th, 2020Nose is cherry liquor. Intense.
Palate is so precise. Perfect late early season cherries.
Very young.
Needs a 2 hour decant. Then you get the density.
