Celler Escoda-Sanahuja
La Llopetera Conca de Barberà Pinot Noir
15/20

Jan 31st, 2017Very interesting terroir with dark limestone soils. All these wines are made by Joan Ramon Escoda and are organic and biodynamic. Medium to deep garnet red with medium plus intensity. Love the funk on this wine. Funky in a good way with herbs, truffles, spices and a bit dirty. As it opened there were some warm dark chocolate, dried and dark cherries too. Moderate acidity (6/10) with balanced tannins. Medium to medium plus bodied with bitter chocolate and rough cherries. Dry medium plus finish with some oregano and other savory spices. Such an interesting bottle of Pinot Nero (noir) from Conca de Barberà located about an hour and a half outside of Barcelona. Definitely worth buying another. Drink till 2020.

Nov 1st, 2016Fun to explore a PN from Spain, and this was interesting as it opened over several hours, but lacked depth. Lots of natty surface appeal won't win my heart.

Mar 2nd, 2015Lil bubble of air in the foil, which made me worried. Opened it a couple hours before drinking it to make sure it wasn’t totally off. Tasted upon opening, it’s funky but not off. I’ve had off bottles of Escoda and this wasn’t one. Quite pretty from start to finish. At dinner, a few hours later, on the nose: cinnamon, cherry ludens, Brett/bandaids, lively. Palette: sour cherry, pomegranate, jasmine and other florals, white pepper. Finish has more white pepper and ginger candies with the powdery stuff on them. Sort of tannic still. Acid and tannin indicates we could hold the other 2 bottles for a while.

Nov 13th, 2023i knew it will be an experiment… i could say “widziały gały co brały”. and it is indeed. everything is strange here. nose is nice (and this i like the best) and reminds me of a real burgundy pinot. in mouth total mess: classical cherry here turns into sour cherry, minerals, oak and earthy notes. acidity is appreciated here. interesting to try but no returns.
