Sangreal Pinot Noir
Geelong, Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia

Very dark Ruby in colour - impenetrable. Red fruits, dried herbs, plum and plum skins - evidence of whole bunch in the ferment ( 70% apparently). Lovely balance, fruit quality and complexity, all at only 6 years of age. An overall sweetness on the palate which overrides the savoury characters. Being from Geelong it’s interesting to compare with the Yarra Valley and Mornington Pinots on the opposite (eastern) side of Port Phillip Bay - same latitude - this seems more succulent although all 3 districts are excellent for Pinot Noir. This is the first of 5 bottles - the drinking window will go another 6 years into the 2030s. This is an exceptional Australian Pinot.

Limpid ruby-red. Finely detailed red currant, raspberry, Asian spice and floral aromas pick up a hint of blood orange with air. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering alluringly sweet red fruit preserve, candied rose, star anise and vanilla flavors that betray no excess fat. In a distinctly elegant style, with fine-grained tannins adding discreet grip to the impressively long, red-fruit- and spice-driven finish. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2022)

Strong vanilla, ripe cherries and a hint of herbs on the nose. Juicy and fragrant red fruits, vanilla, bit of herbs on the palate. Overly sweet.

Stalky whole bunch on nose and palate also an oxidative and charcoal note. On the palate sweet red fruits - more satisfying than the nose. With the stalky nose became more apparent over time with that odd charcoal note. Overdid the whole bunch? Normally one of Australia’s better Pinots / from the Geelong district.

Beetroot stalky vegetal slightly peppery notes. Obviously a fair degree of whole bunch. For the stalky nose it has an amazing red fruited sweet palate. One of the best New World Pinots I've had this year. Must buy more by Farr Pinots from Geelong. Impressive!

Jul 19th, 2017This is the first time ever I drink this wine. Kind of the mid point between a sun drenched Californian and a burgundy. Alcohol good at 13.5, full bodied, smokey, forest floor and good salinity, fine tannin and good acid. Would get better in 2 to 3 years. Fine effort.

From the red soil. Pretty, sour, high toned. Some brilliant fine tannin this year. Love it.
