You know I’m going to do my part and celebrate #NationalWineDay with a glass of vino!

Here’s a California Zinfandel, produced by Broc Cellars. The grapes hail from the Wirth Ranch Vineyard in the Solano County Green Valley AVA of California, less than 15 miles from Napa Valley.

These grapes were grown on old vines, originally planted in 1948. Due in part to the volcanic soils, age of the vines, and Broc Cellars’s dry-farming practices, these vines produced lower yields and more intense concentration of flavors, aromas, and color.

A noteworthy feature of Zinfandel is its tendency to have an irregular fruit set, i.e., grapes that are part of the same bunch may mature at different speeds, something called millerandage, which can be a challenge, creating lack of uniformity, but in some cases may create a beautiful complexity.

This wine is medium purple.

It offers a medium intensity in youthful aromas. Aromas include tart black cherry, black currant, strawberry, rhubarb, violet, anise, fennel, pepper, nutmeg, clove, and delicate peat notes.

On the palate this wine is dry. It has medium(+) acidity, a medium body, medium alcohol, medium(+) tannins, and medium(+) intensity in flavors consistent with the nose. It has a medium finish.

This wine was spontaneously fermented with native, ambient yeast in an open steel tank and then aged for 10 months in a neutral French oak vessel. The resulting wine displays a freshness and purity of fruit character with more subtle spice.
