Deep ruby color with a velvety edge. A fragrance of anise seed and fresh fennel mingles with aromas of black cherries, cured meat, and leather. It's savory and deep on the palate, with black currant, black tea, and an edge of sweet tobacco. Excellent with venison phyllo turnovers. 14.4% abv | $36 (not a sample, but I used to work for this winery)

Garnet red. Very closed at first, this wine needs copious air to open; give it at least two hours in a decanter. Very savory on the palate, with herbal, meaty, almost feral aromas. Flavors of red currant and licorice, and overall deeply savory. I'm quite familiar with this wine, having worked for the winery during this vintage, and it seems to be in a closed phase. Give it a few more years. 14.4% abv

The 2007 Cigare Volant is really drinking well right now.

14.4% abv. 60% grenache, 32% syrah, 4% mourvèdre, 4% cinsault. Mellowing as it slowly ages. More berry-black cherry driven than it's been in the past, less savory, although we had it alongside a meaty Syrah, so it would naturally seem softer. Supple tannins. Really nice.
