Bodegas Muga
Reserva Unfiltered Rioja Tempranillo Blend
No notes. Dependable for its concentration & power, yet always enough acidity to keep its black fruited core fresh. ‘Ol reliable.

Nov 5th, 2023Deep bruised red. Musty damp woods on open quickly giving way to red berries, cedar, tobacco, and leather aromas. Medium bodied, medium + alc, medium acidity. Cherry pie filling, a little flat on the finish in need of more tannin support.
90+ points

Sep 2nd, 2020Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga Martínez, now run by children Manuel, Isabel & Isaac Muga Caño. Deep Ruby, aromas of sweet red and black fruits with pepper spice and oak. 4 grape blend from the Haro district (70% Tempranillo, rest Garnacha, Mazuelo & Graciano), 36 months in oak, palate shows elegant flavors of cherry and currant with espresso, vanilla & toasty oak tones. Soft full ripe tannins, lively acidity on a long finish ending with an earthy mineral character. Great vintage!

Sep 1st, 2020First night open I didn’t really like. Sweet fruits and off balance. Night two it’s a different wine - more balanced fruit and structure. Still not exceptional but much better the second day.

Aug 5th, 2018Wow! This wine is delicious! Shows lots of aroma on the nose, hint of vanilla, ripe red berries, black berry, ripe fig and black berry, plum with backing spices, star anise, cinnamon, all spice and clove. Slightly savory like diluted soy sauce. Smooth tannin, med to med plus acidity, med plus finish.
Goes perfectly with Soy sauce braised pork belly with tofu. Dynamite!

2013 vintage a bit hot and needs some time to settle down. Nice fruit and oak balance.

Mar 27th, 2018On the nose, ripe blueberry, very late season black currant, cocoa, loamy/mineral soil, just a touch of oak and alcohol.
On the palate, no tannins for sure, graceful plum with light acidity and dark chocolate.
Way better than the last bottle, bottle variation working in our favorite tonight perchance?
My guess is this bottle is closer to peak, we have some left and will experiment on a few year delay on the remainders.
