Bodegas Muga
Reserva Unfiltered Rioja Tempranillo Blend
This is why Rioja is awesome, especially from this producer. Another great value, and always a safe bet when I see it in a wine list. Rustic, old world style with smokey roasted meat, rich earth, black pepper and anise upfront. As the wine opens, the notes of black cherry, ripe black plums and violets appear. The tannins are noticeable, but smooth, and the oak is well integrated, leaving a trace of vanilla on the finish. A really easy drinking Tempranillo , with a little garnacha, mazuelo and graciano thrown in the mix.

But Rioja has payed attention, and is picking up the pace. This wine is beautiful. Rustic chic beautiful. Not Elizabeth Taylor's kind of beauty, but surely, Sophia Loren's.

One of the big names in rioja and a well deserved reputation. Their entry level red really showcases the value/quality to be had in the region. Soft ripe cherry and red berry. Sweet oaky pipe tobacco and coconut and roasted wild herbs on the finish. Richly structured tannins med + body and a lovely lingering finish. Take it to your favorite byo

Dec 19th, 2015A distinctive and easily identifiable Rioja Reserva, with deep black fruits, French oak influence, light herbal, earth, and spice characters, and taut tannins at this young age. A Rioja for Bordeaux drinkers

May 20th, 2015This is a touch rustic and savory on the nose, followed by a mid-weight palate of dried cherries, leather, and brewed Ceylon tea. A suggestion of walnuts appears in the long, slightly drying finish. This has years of good drinking ahead.
