Last night I opened this 2019 Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell. This is from the Bodegas Juan Gil Jumilla, Spain, 100% Monastrell (Mourvèdre).

On the nose there is black plum, blackberry, blueberry, black pepper, violet, gravel and earth.

On the palate there is blackberry, blueberry, plum, black cherry, black pepper, spice, soft oak, gravel and earth.

This is a full bodied wine with a smooth sweet juicy mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium supple tannins that move smoothly into a long black & red fruit earthy finish. We are on another weekend and I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend planned. Please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Good with Wagyu beef strip steaks. Big and dense and not without some balance..

Sipping Fine Wine

Juan Gil Jiménez first built his winery in 1916 in Jumilla, and passed it down to his future generations. From 100% Certified Organic Monastrell (or Mourvèdre in France), in chalky, stony soils, aromas of dark berry fruits and woody spice. Aged 12 months in French oak, palate shows blackberry and plum with smoky wood flavors and notes of cacao and cinnamon spice. Soft ripe tannins, medium+ ending with a light toasty earthy character. Great value! Very nice!

A good value at $20, and probably available cheaper. Dry and tannic, probably should have gone another year or two. Fruit, raisins, chocolate on the nose, medium weight on the palate, with a good finish.

I don't drink that many under $15 bottles, but Juan Gil's Silver Label Monastrell is one that still excites me to try when I see a new vintage. Starts with a rich perfume of dark fruit, vanilla, and smoked oak, with some secondary baking spice and cocoa powder. Similar to the nose, the palate shows more polish and complexity than I expected. At times it ventures into syrupy territory, but is never heavy or cloying.
