Bodegas El Nido
El Nido Jumilla Cabernet Sauvignon Monastrell
The 2021 El Nido is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell from Jumilla. Aged for 22 months in American and French oak barrels, this garnet-red wine offers forward aromas, with prominent oak followed by notes of tomato leaf and ripe black fruit. Big and rich, the palate is bold and substantial, finishing with ripe fruit flavors. Despite all that ripeness, there are some slightly green notes here. The 2021 is a carefully crafted red that’s both savory and stylish. (Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous, September 2024)

77 acres of very old vaso trained Monatrell vines & 29 acres of 30 year old Cab Sauvignon. A blend of 70% Cab Sauvignon & 30% Monastrell aged 2 years. Dark Ruby with dark berry flavors & complex spice. Rich ripe blueberry & blackberry flavors with vanilla spice, tobacco, balanced acidity. Tannins are approachable but the wine is still very young, long finish ending with integrated oak notes. Still needs time, don’t be tempted but if you wait this will be great! Tasting Sample!

Jan 25th, 2024Sappy. Cherry preserves, cassis, blueberry, and plum. The entire fruit spectrum. Clove, vanilla, sandalwood. Full bodied but not too intensely concentrated while maintaining freshness. More and more layered with air. A cult wine at $120 a bottle (for Jumilla?!?), but clearly well made.

Sep 23rd, 2020Dark, bright-rimmed purple. A powerfully scented, deeply complex bouquet evokes mineral-accented boysenberry, cherry preserve, licorice, exotic spice and vanilla aromas that expand slowly with air. Stains the palate with sweet, deeply concentrated black/blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and candied violet flavors that show a surprisingly graceful touch for their heft. Velvety, steadily mounting tannins lend gentle grip to a broad, smoky finish that hangs on with superb, spice-driven tenacity. (aged in new French and American oak barrels for two years) (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, April 2019)

Jul 31st, 2019Enormous wine, but probably not worth the 3x premium over their lower-end El Nido Clio.

Jun 17th, 2018Owned in collaboration with Chris Ringland, Jorge Ordonez, Miguel Gil and others, located in the Valley of La Aragona inside the Murcia district of Jumilla. Dark Ruby, purple edges, with aromas of black/blue fruits and spice. Cabernet/Monastrell blends shows blackberry and blueberry flavors, complex spice, tobacco and cacao with an earthy feel. The finish shows some leather notes, well structured, smooth tannins and should improve over next few years, too young to fully enjoy now.

Nov 18th, 2017Wow! Entering the prime drinking plateau, this once severely wild wine nowadays show elegance and great balance. The oak and tannins are beautifully resolved, and the dark fruits perfectly aligned with its acidity and forceful minerals on the endless finish. Stunning showing! Thru 2025 at least.
