Becker Vineyards
Iconoclast Texas Cabernet Sauvignon
Fine and neutral, not heavy. Easy crowd pleaser that’s local.
HEB.

This is a go-to for us. One of the better Texas wines and very accessible (available at most grocery and liquor stores). We usually have a bottle of this on hand. Versatile enough for both meat and pasta dishes.

1 person found it helpfulMar 29th, 2015Dramatic label art. That must be the aforementioned ‘Iconoclast’. Color is good. Dark red. Smell a bit earthy with a hint of band-aide. Not much fruit or oak. Flavors have a hint of volatile acidity (ethyl acetate), and fairly sharp acid. It mellows with food. Paired well with red pepper hummus and pita. It’s drinkable red, but a bit funky in a bad way. I might have gotten a bad bottle…

Apr 10th, 2024This Texas Cabernet from Becker Vineyards exemplifies how Texas wines are maturing nicely. It is a simple wine true to the Cabernet grapes. Nice aroma, fruity with dark berries notes. It is pleasant and inviting. I am enjoying it with grilled thick pork chops. Nice pairing.

Aug 8th, 2022Visiting Fredericksburg TX for a few days. This is TX hill country and has a big winery community. Never tried any TX wines before but found a few surprises here. We tasted at Becker earlier today but not this wine. $30 on the restaurant wine list. Becker wasn’t our favorite stop but it is the only local winery represented on their list. Overall local wines seemed overpriced compared to CA wines. Just realized we had an older vintage (2018) on our last trip from Houston to Anaheim. It’s interesting that most of the grapes used in the local wines come from Lubbock (panhandle) area. Don’t know where these grapes came from, or what varietals are present.

Aug 8th, 2021On a road trip from Houston to Anaheim, staying the night in Ft. Stockton and dining at our favorite funky diner, K-Bob’s Steakhouse. This wine is being closed out so we were offered a discounted price of $22. Served a bit warm. The artwork on the label is a self portrait of a guy who self described his occupation as a “wizard”. The wine is from the Texas Hill Country area of Fredericksburg and the wine can only be sold in Texas. Always interesting to try local stuff. Not the greatest, but an interesting experience. Worked with our rib eyes.

May 15th, 2020Becker has been our favorite Texas winery. This lovely cab from 2015 that was drank in 2020 exhibits the reason why. Very drinkable with dark meats but light enough for chicken as well. Very smooth, with great berry flavor. Very little bite from the tannins. Great wine
