The 2011 SummuS from Castello Banfi is an estate-grown Super Tuscan comprised of 40% Sangiovese, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Syrah. Its name SummuS is Latin for “The Summit.” The wine glows red, but with an inky density, and an aromatic intensity to match. Black cherry, blueberry, and plum meet tobacco, licorice, and vanilla in a notably chewy style. The healthy backbone of tannin is buoyed by an ample level of acidity that contributes to both its massive structure and the balance that helps conceal it. That balance intensifies its secondary notes of chocolate, underbrush, cedar, violets, and stony earth, along with providing a vibrancy that allows it to stand out.

This one caught me off guard. I love a Tuscan blend but often discount the big houses such as Banfi. My mistake. The 2006 is outstanding and drinking incredible right now. The nose is full of dark fruit and red currant. Juicy and tannic at the same time. Very well structured. We can be friends again Banfi.

Showing some age, in a good way. Dried black tea, dried cherry, leather, spice, some black pepper, medium body, medium - acidity, tannins are starting to fall away giving it a lovely, supple mouthfeel. This wine is Paul Newman in "Nobody's Fool". The elder who seems a bit rough, is actually pretty refined and still has some fight left.

Great 1995. Remnants of bouquet, soft tannins. Excellent with ribeye steak.
