Azelia
Barolo Nebbiolo
Popped and poured; no formal notes. Dark cherry, red flowers, dusty earth and dried herbs. A touch round but bone dry and the expected structure is there. Give these a little bit of time. Better after 2023. Pretty solid value.

May 15th, 2022Nose full of tar and ripe plum, veering to prune. Took an hour in the decanter to sort itself but then wonderfully balanced and layered. Black tea, darker plum, perfectly drying tannins to match the perfect, fatty short rib. I would drink up lest the drying tannins persist more as the fruit wanes.

Apr 19th, 2021I’m normally not a big Italian wine enthusiast, but this caught my attention. Neither overly tart or overly light, this showed killer sweet fruit notes of blueberries and candied black cherries with vanilla pipe tobacco and cocoa dusted dates. Tar, rose petal, and a kiss of sweet oak on the palate. Very smooth. I’m sure this will age well.

Aug 31st, 2019The 2014 Azelia is a bit of a departure from the fantastic 2013 version. While still very high quality, this didn’t have quite the power and complexity, nor was it as fun. Dark cherry fruit and tar with a bit of a burnt rubber thing that took me a bit by surprise. Tannic. On its own, this may have shown better but the 2005 Giovanni Rosso “Cerretta” that we drank just before was sensational. Drink now or through 2024.

Jun 6th, 2018Popped and poured; consumed over two hours. Proof that 2013 is a special vintage. This was absolutely outstanding. Slowly gaining momentum all the way until the last drop. Abundant dark and red fruits, tar, eucalyptus and camphor. Rich fruit on the palate. Stiff tannins. Wonderful structure but with ample fruit to carry the day. What a treat. Can hardly wait to get into some of their single cru wines. Drink now through 2030...possibly longer.
