Sharply-etched black fruit and rustic tannins give this wine a beefy feeling. Not as generous as the Oliver Ranch bottling, it still has great depth and presence. Cassis, black cherry, leather, cedar and a bit of anise in the background.

First stop on our MD trip this year was to Aperture Cellars in downtown Healdsburg.

First of the single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings we tasted at Aperture Cellars with Lauren.

Deep ruby red. Layered nose with ripe berries, dark cocoa, tobacco leaves, leather and cinnamon with an earthy undertone. Medium plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Lots of fall spices on the palate with some dark cocoa and blackberries. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2032.

Tasted at the tasting room and retails for $95.00.

@Delectable Wine this is the Aperture Cellars Del Rio Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Brand new release (3/6) and inaugural bottling from Aperture Cellars and Jesse Katz.
Super dark purple in appearance. A bit of iron on the nose with notes of black berries, cigar box and baking spices. Heavy tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Rich and voluptuous palate with baking spices, blueberries, cassis, anise and crushed gravel. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2036. (94+)

First time trying these Single Vineyard Cabernets by Jesse Katz and boy were we in for a treat. This is the inaugural bottling of their Del Rio Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon which is made up of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. If aged like the Oliver Ranch Vineyard then it is aged for 20 months in 70% new French oak barrels. This will only improve with age.

$$$ - Sample provided by the winery. Release price is $95.00.

Pours dark dark dark ruby.
Still smells young - would give this 5-10 more years. I smell cocoa, stewed black plums, cedar, eucalyptus?
Strong acid for a cab, medium tannins, chewy, a little gritty.

Local celebrity of a wine.
A strange smell that leads you away from believing it's Cabernet Sauvignon... Baby's breath, honey florals, pleasant but disconcerting... if you're into 'new things' try it out.

Another stop during our Sonoma visit Saturday was Aperture wines (Jesse Katz). The new tasting room and winery is located right outside Healdsburg. The modern architecture and vineyard patio made for a really nice tasting experience. I have always enjoyed the Aperture Cab (Cab, Merlot, Malbec blend), but the Del Rio stepped everything up a notch. 100% Cab Sauv. This wine is full bodied and powerful. The winemaker describes as “Consistently floral year over year with dried juniper lavender, blackberry preserve, olive tapenade, and cassias. The mountain hillside tannins frame this wine with incredible weight while still holding onto its bright elegance, Multiple layers of ripe raspberries, blueberry, and cherry-cola complimented by dried herbs,
and graphite that build on the palate to arrive at a long, mineral-driven finish.
