Unexpected and delightful - Pinot Noir from Southwest Virginia! From vineyards planted at 1800 feet (big diurnal range and early harvest), this silky wine sang with notes of loam and damp earth, maitake mushroom, cranberry, red cherry, raspberry compote, boysenberry, violet, lavender, black pepper, toast and wood smoke, with bracing acid and medium-plus tannins on a medium frame. A long, satisfying, and juicy finish. One to seek out that proves how careful site selection and winemaking skill can produce superb results from innovative grape/region combinations!

#winestudio#winestudio#winestudio 2012 @AnkidaRidge #Pinot Noir, Virginia #VAwine. 12.9 abv. A stunning example of how site selection and elevation can create a wine with harmony from an unsuspecting place and a grape that is über difficult. Aromas of violets & smoke mixed with cranberry, tart cherry and pomegranate intertwined with cedar and spice box. Amazing acidity on a long, soft, silky finish. #wine #sommelier #nomnom

Cherry, cranberry, raspberry, tobacco leaf, oak and hints of spice. Good structure and well-integrated tannins.

This 2012 Ankida Ridge Pinot Noir is the subject of much hype here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Many well respected people have recommended this wine to me and so I was excited to taste it today. It doesn't look like Pinot and it doesn't taste like Pinot. The nose has a slight amount of red fruit which is echoed on the palate accompanied by a little spice. Flat in the mid-palate and finishes tart. Major disappointment.

I would blind taste this wine as Sonoma Coast, and I'm guessing you would too.
