Finca Altamira La Consulta Mendoza Malbec
Decanted off the sediment and let breath for several hours. Can’t find anything wrong with this... It shows fine, clean purple fruit, and cedar and floral aromas on the nose. Good acidity; tart plummy fruit.
It may simply be a matter of taste, but now that the primary fruit has faded, there is something missing to my palate consistent with my previous experience with aged Malbec. Lacking some spice or herbaceousness or bitterness to provide balance in its age.

We recently pulled some cases out of storage, which haven't seen the light of day for nearly 15 years, so I'll have some fun posts in the next several months.
Nose has split oak firewood (barely seasoned), cigar box, moist cedar shavings, blackberry, dried black currant, dried roses, fresh violets, moist leather, dried lavender dark chocolate powder and graphite pencil shavings.
Palate has chocolate covered blackberry, tarry black cherry, cedar sawdust, dark chocolate bark, prune, anise candy, clay pot and leather. Very long finish, subtle tannins exist still, amazing wine!
Cork pulled, 2h rest, then decanted 6h, a perfect bottle, still young, future bottles may be 2023-30, without concern.
100% Malbec (715 cases) | Wine Spectator Top 100: 2005, Rank: 31
Perfect pair to homemade burgers from a local farmer in Columbia Co. NY (Kinderhook Farm), cooked to a beautiful medium-rare served on toasted brioche burger rolls.

The nose reveals, ripe, lush, ruby, baked; blackberries, blueberries, mulberries, boysenberries, blackberry raspberries, black cherries & plum. Black & white pepper, dark spice, black licorice, mixed berry cola, sweet tarry notes, black tea, alluvial soils, dry crushed rocks, soft leather with beautiful floral lavender & violets.
The body is round, lush & full. The tannins soft, dusty, sticky/tarry and ripe as hell. The structure, tension, length and balance are in perfect harmony. ripe, lush, ruby, juicy; blackberries, blueberries, mulberries, boysenberries, blackberry raspberries, black cherries, creamy raspberries & plum. Black & white pepper, grilled meats, dark spice, black licorice, mixed berry cola, sweet tarry notes, black tea, alluvial soils, dry crushed rocks, dry clay, dry herbs, soft leather, hints of tobacco with ash with beautiful, bright floral lavender & violets. The acidity is as good as it gets. The long, ruby, ripe, polished, well balanced. elegant and doesn’t end. It’s so beautiful!
Photos of, our host during our April visit, alcohol evaporators ( @Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher Bum ) that keep this wine at 13.5 ABV and their Estate vines with the Andes in the background.
