Altocedro

Año Cero Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

A robust, delicious cab that has a lot going on in terms of depth of taste. There is oak and dark cherry on the nose, with a bit of leather. Purchased at Costco... great price! — 20 days ago

Cheval des Andes Mendoza Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Very impressed with this example. Youthful and still quite tannic. Sweet, rich and dense, with the Malbec varietal displaying high alcohol (15%), and sweetness. Excellent QPR. — 9 days ago

Good to know, @Daron Watson. In my mind, the reason this vintage showed so well, was due to the bottle age. 16’s would be a cellar purchase for me.

Dominio del Plata (Susana Balbo)

Brioso Agrelo Red Blend 2016

Rojo intenso y profundo.

Dark ruby in color with a cloudy brick rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, chocolates, vinaigrette, mocha, coffee and black pepper.

Full bodied, rich and smooth, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, raisins, vanilla, cedar, licorice, cloves, coffee, chocolates, tobacco, peppercorn and vinaigrette.

Medium finish with soft tannins and spices.

This Argentinian Red Blend from the house of Dave Phinney is always enjoyable. Nicely balanced with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.

This non vintage is probably on the way out now, but still very enjoyable. I kept it for 3 years to see how it evolves, and now I know it's better fresh. It started dying after an hour of airtime.

Good right out of the bottle and good for parties.

I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

A blend of Malbec with some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Aged for 10 months in oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$20.

Trumpeter Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Smells likes sriracha covered green peppers and pomegranate. Tastes like raspberry-baked spicy green bell pepper. Cool experience for the regional production, but not my favorite style of Cabernet. — 12 days ago

Blueberry sauce, black cherry, violets, cocoa powder, dried herbs, underbrush, coffee grounds. A tiny bit syrupy but delicious with the BLT pasta tonight — 17 days ago

Bodega Catena Zapata

D.V. Catena Historico Mendoza Red Blend 2015

Nice fruity Malbec blend. Dark blue and black fruit notes. Hints of licorice chocolate and spice. Balanced acidity with a bit of chew. (Due to the fact that a bit of Petite Verdot is blended in) — 19 days ago

This reminds me of what Rombauer aspires to be. Buttery, oaky, and unabashed in style, yet pulls it in just before it gets all out of whack. Marshmallow cream puff is the one note that stands out on the nose. Additional notes of cotton candy, mint and rich lemon cream come through aromatically and on the palate (with some honeyed tropical fruits). Maybe hold and check in with 2-3yrs more of age? — 14 days ago

We were there two years ago. You would love their reds while having dinner at their tasting room and restaurant. Really great food as well.

Really interesting wine. Has a nice stone ground quality about it. Sweet. I think this one got a really interesting high score, and not too sure why it really got that rating. It's definitely nice and balanced. Round start and sort of more of a jagged finish. I think that serving this one with food would really diversify this one a bit. But I also feel that this one is a bit young and probably needs to sit for a couple of years. I think this one definitely has the potential to reach 93-4-ish but I just can't pull the trigger on that right now.

La Mascota Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This is an interesting bottle of wine. The first thought that came to mind right after I opened this was whoa this has a bad nose. Rather astringent and most notably smelled like hot asphalt. Luckily that went away after being open for a while. Luckily it tasted way better. Currants and sort of a smoky chocolate were highlights. Maybe a hint of raspberry and a muted spice as well. This is in the movie night class of wine for me. Medium body ++ but not quite full bodied. Overall an easy drinking wine that drinks well alone. Perfect movie night drink. — 2 days ago

Calcàreo Granito de Tupungato Cabernet Franc 2015

Oh wow. This is the real deal. Complex, lifted blue and red fruits on the nose with a subtle vegetal/briney component. More floral with each minute it airs. Doubles down on the palate - powerful wine. Best bottle of Argentine wine I have had in recent memory. Overdelivers. — 10 days ago
