I took this bottle from my cellar to a friend who just received his complete allocation of 2022 Wendouree. We obviously compared this 2011 Shiraz Mataro with the latest 2022. If this exercise proved one thing that was that any cuvée of Wendouree should not be opened at under 10 years of age. The 2011 had a gorgeous nose of blackberry, liquorice and spice…..intoxicating! Whereas the 2022 was as tight as a drum…giving very little. The palate was fluid and smooth with those same aromatics coming through on the palate with that amazing old vine opulence and persistence. I had my first bottle back in August 2022. Notes are here on Delectable.

Unfortunately this happens with Wendouree sometimes
Any flavour is completely covered up by a painting smell
It doesn’t change my opinion on this producer though
The 99% of the bottles are between the top OZ wines

Youth coming out from every corner, brilliant freshness balancing the texture of the tannicity (!?!?) still very complex and pleasant
A monument to what Australia can do . 96 is a great vintage in South Australia and this sample reinforces the concept.
Why don't we all drink these wines at once?? The world might change....give me more😵🤣

Probably the most approachable wine from this producer when young, very focused, blueberry, minerally and explosive mouthful. Long and long life

Big whiff of eucalyptus, great w beef rib, just so Australian, one of a kind, can still taste it two hours later. Great stuff.

1 person found it helpfulApr 9th, 2015Definitely good, but not even close to its peak. It took me a day in the decanter to have it at its best. Shiraz mataro is lighter than Shiraz Malbec, not better not worse just different result, but I love both.👍

On the nose licorice, dark green something, balsamic. Clay, little coffee, red flowers. Slightly smoky.
Perfect mouth with aromas matching the nose and fantastic texture. Balance at the best. Tannin still present. I wish we could drink like this every night✌️
