Wine Situation Final Five

The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. At the end of each episode, host Ellen Clifford wants to know the basics of her guests’ final thoughts on wine, drink and food. This month, Ellen talks with Jiaqi Tang of the Honest Wine Shop. Edited for length, you can find the full episode here QUESTION ONE Ellen: Question number one: whatcha drinking? What are you into these days? Jiaqi: Champagne ! Blanc de Blancs ! All day! If I could make a license plate that said Champagne Blanc de Blancs , I totally would do that. QUESTION TWO Ellen: Question number two is: what is a favorite or unusual pairing? Jiaqi: I actually like vermouth , so I would have a Blue Stilton cheese with vermouth. You have the saltiness and mushroom from blue cheese—it goes very well even with red vermouth , it doesn’t have to be white. QUESTION THREE Ellen: Question three: what’s your favorite snack? Jiaqi: Popcorn. I’m a simple girl. QUESTION FOUR Ellen: Question four: if you made a wine, what would you make, and what would you name it? Jiaqi: I think I want to make a field blend . I don’t want to be overly stuffy. I want to make a wine that drinks amazing and can hit the retail for under 25 dollars. And so where would I grow those grapes? In affordable pockets, like Aragon we talked about. What I’m going to call it…something cool. Things I Like. QUESTION FIVE Ellen: Question number five: what’s bringing you joy these days? Jiaqi: My dog. Daisy. I have a sheep-a-doodle. She brings me a lot of joy. It’s truly unconditional love. And also being in the wine store. It’s truly my outlet. *** Jiaqi can be found at her shop, the Honest Bottle Shop! Check out the previous Wine Situation podcast with Elle Rodriguez here .

Dependably quite nice! Killer price point to boot. A much better use of NM than bomb development (understatement) — 10 months ago

Lightness and fun leads. Toast and nuts follow. So like a lightly catered cocktail party in a wine. — 3 years ago

Billecart-Salmon

Brut Rosé Champagne Blend

She is red-fruit forward, she has brioche touches and sea salt nuances on the nose. The palate is that sort of balance there isn’t a proper word for but gosh it’s there. Finishes slightly toasty with a zip of lemon and a squeeze of cranberry. — a year ago

Palmer & Co

Brut Reserve Champagne Blend

Palmer turned my head in general at a recent tasting—if you can get your hands on the 1996 vintage my gosh…but for exceptional Champagne at (if not everyday) more frequently do-able prices lean in. Toasty white bread with these citrus notes that…can I be honest? It reminds me when as a teen vegetarian in St Louis I’d do late night runs to Steak and Shake where my friends got burgers but I’d order toast and butter with a lime freeze. Those toasty but piquant and refreshing notes. Expect like that on a platter with even more nuance. Obvi it doesnt taste like that precisely but its toast and citrus vibes don’t let go and cream and apple butter are backup singers. Do drink Palmer. — a year ago
