Very good now but will still benefit from a few more years of age.

I knew this would be special from the moment I eyed it in the legendary K&L Wines web catalogue, and it does not disappoint. Pouring it out, its age is apparent in the colour, ruby red edging into brown. On the nose, it is a sensory overload of summer, bright sunlight shining on wild berries, the cassis note is particularly apparent. Tasting it, the nine years it’s had to integrate make it difficult to call out any individual characteristics, so well integrated and fully in harmony it has become. Reminds me of another old RRV pinot I’ve had the luck to sample, the Merry Edwards - in each case, there is some kind of wild campfire hedonism that seems to drive the chase. My friend tells me that Russian River Valley makes great wines because it’s not about the farmers, it’s about the hippies obsessed with flavour; this bottle brings me around to his way of thinking.
