Now this is what I’m talking about! Best of this Bouchard haul. I wonder how much vintage played a role. Dense and intense, yet so chiselled. Aromas of pears, peaches, brioche, white flowers, spices, and even a touch of jackfruit were just bursting out of the glass. Super dense, precise, and long on the palate. Has a really interesting plummy mid-palate note, and lovely salinity. Loved it!

Tremendous elegance on the palate, though this is surprisingly austere. Nose is tame compared to previous vintages, doesn’t have the soaring aromatic complexity of the 18 base… yet. Hard to say whether this is just a very young/reticent vintage or something else going on. Base 19 disgorged 2021.

Smells like an artisan bakery early in the morning... there’s that really fruity pungent sourdough starter smell, mixed with a whiff of bread that’s just started to brown in the oven. Then it’s just an insanely fruity, pretty, complex nose, with hints of pear, quince and raspberry. Palate is absurd; spot on acid, enough chalky minerals to keep it interesting, but it isn’t austere at all.
In fact, it’s one of the most seductive young champagnes I can remember trying. The sweetness on the finish is perfect and so natural. A real stunner. Would not think twice about paying 2x what this sells for. Disgorged 2020.

Always and forever my favorite grower (that I have frequently enough). Here, his entry level bottle from 2014 vintage. Always single vineyard, single variety and single vintage. Wonderful intensity and really solid complexity. Baked pears and golden apples, spices and flowers. Finishes with very good length and depth. Never ceases to impress.

V17 (so 2017 vintage) April 2019 disgorgement. These wines are made as a single vintage, single vineyard, single varietal and very low dosage. A darling of the grower champagne movement.
The fruit here is crazy intense, both aromatically and on the palate. Spiced prickly pear, mango, oxidized apple and wild herbs. It’s racy and nervy on the palate sporting honeyed stone fruits, limestone and sea salt. Didn’t pick up much yeast character as this is fairly lean, but the slight autolysis flair was welcomed and gave this a nice boost in complexity. For being so low in dosage, this is surprisingly (in a good way) full bodied and even somewhat creamy in texture. Very enjoyable. Thanks for helping me get my hands on a bottle @joe leatherwood .

Bouchard’s Blanc de Noirs Val Vilaine is especially strong in 2017 and also a fabulous introduction to this range of magnificent Champagnes. Beautifully resonant and inviting, the 2017 is so gorgeous. Pear, baked apple, dried flowers, mint and spice all build as the 2017 opens up in the glass. More than anything else, the 2017 impresses with its poise and raciness. The slightly reductive character found in some previous releases is not present in the 2017, and that really lets the purity of the fruit shine through. Bouchard does not push this site to the degree he does most of his other vineyards, so the Val Vilaine doesn’t quite offer the complexity of the top wines here, but words really can’t do justice to just how delicious the 2017 is.
