About as archetypal as Rioja gets, this is a gorgeous Gran Reserva that punches well above its weight. Traditional in style, it sports a medium bodied palate with a spectacular balance between fruit, acidity and tannin, all of which comes together in a long, coconut-tinged finish. Drinking well now, this could go further but why wait?

Dusty musty earthy spicy nose w/out much fruit. Maybe some blackberry jam on nose, but more so on the palate. Super savory medium body and just some serious earth in your mouth. A nice light tartness in the tail end. Really nice.

This is a very enjoyable red Rioja.
Showing black and red fruits with earth, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, peppercorn, leather, cedar, leather and vanilla.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with with great complexity and mouthfeel.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats, cheeses and pickled vegetables.

Nicely aged and peaking now. Nice and engaging.

A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. Aged for 24 in American oak barrels.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

Light bodied yet highly tannic Rioja. Personally, I expect Rioja to be at least medium bodied but very drinkable.

Cherry candies with notes of vanilla and almond. Oxidized aromas (typical of mature Rioja red wines). A lithe and enjoyable wine.

A grand price for a Grand Reserva. Might be a bit spoiled from our recent trip to Rioja.
