This funky Zin seems like it hasn’t quite come together yet but has lots of interesting components. Nose has loads of red fruit tinged with prune, and an element reminiscent of balsamic-infused maple syrup. A teeny little bit of VA. Palate is simple and there’s a bit of residual sugar. Caparone’s Zins (and other wines) are reputed to age for years, so I wonder if I’m catching this in its awkward years.

Tastes like a Zin from the early 70s. Very light color. Pungent prune-tinged berry fruit along with high-toned nose-tickling limestoney minerality. Lively and savory in the mouth. A true wine for dinner. 13.4%!

Forget old school. This is ancient school. Retro. Startlingly light color (it would be light even for a Pinot Noir!). Nose punches its way out, with zingy, spicy blackberry, with a dried fruit note not unlike a good Valpo Ripasso, along with intense limestone dust minerality. Intense but zesty in the mouth, with lip-smacking acids carrying dried blackberry fruit and almost saline minerality. Very youthful for a 6 year old Zin. And just a stupid bargain. This tastes like Zins from the late 60s and early 70s.

Black cherry, dried apricot, vanilla and mint. Mildly surprised these fuckers didn't call this a Primitivo

Strawberry, cherry and vanilla at best. Weird vegetal and acrid at worst. Overall positive, clean and bright. Give it some time to breathe.
