Wittmann

Morstein Großes Gewächs Riesling 2012

Mid Lemon in colour. A 10 year old GG from the Rheinhessen - not a hint of TDN (Kerosene/Petrol notes in aged Riesling). Just been reading a research paper on TDN from the Australian Wine Research Institute. Definitely sunshine to the extent of sunburnt grapes is a big factor. Also a fact I wasn’t aware of that cork allows TDN to release more than with a screw cap. This GG had a cork, although personally I would prefer a screw cap particularly with a Riesling. This Wittmann showed peach and mineral - also white flowers ( Daisies, Barb thought). Enough acid to keep things lively and delicious - some herbs. Enough fruit richness and sweetness to almost convince you that it is off dry but it is actually 13% ABV. An excellent dry German Riesling worthy of the Grosses Gewachs classification. A very high score of 19/20 from Michael Schmidt. — 3 years ago

Pretty amazing. Palo Cortado? Not sure. Delicate, elegant, nutty but subtle. Long finish but more ethereal than something young. What a singular experience! — 5 years ago

Premium Ouveau Honjozo

Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute Premium Ouveau Honjozo. This has a lot of punch to it - little bit in the bitter side if taken by itself. Better with food and had with butterfish and sea perch sushi. Went very well with that after the differential with the prior sake was past. — 7 months ago

El Tesoro

Paradiso Extra Añejo Tequila

Dessert outside,

2019 Best Extra Añejo Tequila from the Beverage Tasting Institute: "Gold color. Attractive aromas of cedar, caramel, crushed pineapple, eucalyptus-vanilla, and fine tea with a round, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, complex, very long allspice, lime leaf, dried mango, smoke, and sea salt finish. Exotic aromas and superb integration make this the Cognac or Single Malt-lovers Tequila; a must-try." (04/2019) Distiller's note: "A distinct tequila, El Tesoro Paradiso® is slowly aged for five years in French oak ex-Cognac barrels. Created by Don Felipe Camarena in collaboration in with Alain Royer of A. de Fussigny Cognac, this unique tequila has an earthy taste with a hint of minerality, tropical characteristics, and sweet notes of butterscotch."

Weingut Mann

Rot

All hail Germany’s Weingut Mann, from Eckelsheim. 2018 Cuvée Rot. 50% Merlot. 50% *Dornfelder. 100% would drink again. Good concentration, strong color with a gentle tannic grip and surprisingly only 11% alcohol. Worthy of cellaring. A brilliant “natural wine” with the ability to woo the naysayers. A wine that could shake off the title of “natural” like a wet dog, knowing it has the integrity to simply be, a good wine, without having to shout out its resume. Confident this would please many people, on either side of the fence. Would love to taste again in two years.

*Dornfelder is a dark-skinned variety of grape of German origin used for red wine. It was created by August Herold at the grape breeding institute in Weinsberg in the Württemberg region in 1955. Herold crossed the grape varieties Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe, the latter which bears his name, to create Dornfelder. Via Wikipedia ;)
